Brand new May releases including John Doe and Hard Working Americans

j

JOHN DOE

The Westerner

jjjj

Throughout his career, Doe has garnered worldwide acclaim: NPR Music describes his work as “one of the warmest, most welcome voices in pop music. There’s a beseeching quality to his singing that draws you in with curiosity,” while American Songwriter praises, “…a winning platter of ‘60s inspired rock with a singer-songwriter twist.” Doe calls The Westerner his “psychedelic soul record from the Arizona desert.”
The album features ten new tracks from Doe with guest appearances from Chan Marshall of Cat Power, Debbie Harry of Blondie, Cindy Wasserman of Dead Rock West and Tom Brosseau. The Westerner was produced by Howe Gelb (Neko Case, M. Ward), Dave Way (Fiona Apple) and Doe. The album’s artwork was designed by Shepard Fairey and Aaron Huey to support Native American rights via a campaign called Protect The Sacred, with additional photography by Jim Herrington.

HARD WORKING AMERICANS

Rest In Chaos

jjjj

jjjjj

The Hard Working Americans do more with one moment than many artists do with an entire career, and prove it again with its latest release ‘Rest In Chaos’

With the exception of Guy Clark’s “The High Price of Inspiration,” the 13-track album was written by the band on the road, live in six different studios.

The lead track, “Opening Statement,” sets the album’s gritty tone and rolls right into “It Runs Together,” which describes Snider first meeting his ex-wife in recovery. “Half Ass Moses” is essentially three driving rock songs rolled into one, and the gospel-esque stomper “Throwing The Goats,” blasts “we’ve got all the integrity that money can’t buy.” The album’s title is nestled in “Ascending Into Madness,” which Snider says is “about being an artist and coming up with new art.”

It’s been Snider’s two-decade-plus professional proclivity to take the lyrical knife to expectation and subtly stab, then twist. On ‘Rest In Chaos’ Snider’s knife has become a machete, with both words and voice.

The Hard Working Americans will once again prove that moniker when they hit the road for a multi-city tour mere days after ‘Rest In Chaos’ releases.

THIRTY TIGERS New APRIL Releases : Hayes Carll, Santana, The Jayhawks,Willis Clan, Sammy Walker

Celebrate spring with brand new april releases including SANTANA,
THE JAYHAWKS, HAYES CARLL…

Lovers and Leavers, the highly anticipated new full-length album from Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Hayes Carll, will be released April 8.
Produced by Grammy-award winning producer and musician Joe Henry (Glen Hansard, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt), the 10-track album was recorded live over five days in L.A. during the winter of 2015.
Lovers and Leavers is Carll’s first release since 2011’s acclaimed, KMAG YOYO (& Other American Stories). Widely praised by critics, The New York Times asserted, “…[Carll] extends a worthy Texas tradition: the weathered, hard-drinking, weary but clear-eyed troubadour…,” while SPIN included him in their feature “The Next Big Things: 11 Artists You Must Hear in 2011,” calling him a “silver-tongue-in-cheek country iconoclast.”
Most recently, Carll was nominated for “Best Country Song” at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards for his song, “Chances Are.” Originally featured on KMAG YOYO, the song was recently re-recorded by Lee Ann Womack for her acclaimed 2014 album The Way I’m Livin’.

April 15, 2016 marks the release date of Santana IV, the wildly anticipated studio album that reunites the revered early ‘70s lineup of guitar icon Carlos Santana (guitar, vocals), Gregg Rolie (keyboards, lead vocals), Neal Schon (guitar, vocals), Michael Carabello (percussion) and Michael Shrieve (drums). The album signifies the first time in 45 years – since 1971’s multi-platinum classic Santana III – that the quintet has recorded together.

Santana IV features 16 all-new tracks written and produced by the band that burst with the same unparalleled energy and superlative musicianship that made Santana a pioneering force in world music and a household name across the globe. Joining the core Santana IV band in the studio are current Santana members Karl Perazzo (percussion) and Benny Rietveld (bass), with the legendary vocalist Ronald Isley guesting on two cuts.

Produced by Peter Buck, Tucker Martine, and Gary Louris, this is the first Jayhawks album since 2011’s “Mockingbird Time” and is a return to the lineup of the band that made “Rainy Day Music” in 2003 – the core band of Gary Louris, Marc Perlman, Tim O’Reagan, and Karen Grotberg.
“It’s the start of a brand new adventure.” sings Gary Louris on “Quiet Corners & Empty Spaces”, the opening track on The Jayhawks’ new album Paging Mr. Proust. The band formed in Minneapolis in 1985 and the album shows their commitment to adventure and forward motion which makes this collection of songs exciting and instantly memorable.

SANTANA IV Reunites 1973 Legendary Band Lineup

Santana-GATEFOLD-LP-1t

1st Time Since 1973

The Original Santana Band

Carlos Santana – Gregg Rolie – Neal Schon
Michael Shrieve – Michael Carabello

Santana IV  features 16 all-new tracks written and produced by the band that burst with the same unparalleled energy and superlative musicianship that made Santana a pioneering force in world music and a household name across the globe. Joining the core Santana IV band in the studio are current Santana members Karl Perazzo (percussion) and Benny Rietveld (bass), with the legendary vocalist Ronald Isley guesting on two cuts.

The origins for the reunion go back several years, when Schon suggested that he and Carlos Santana record together. Santana liked the idea but went one better, proposing that they recruit Rolie, Shrieve and Carabello for what would be called Santana IV. After initial writing sessions and rehearsals took place in 2013, the group recorded throughout 2014 and 2015, amassing 16 spellbinding tracks that combined all their signature elements – Afro-Latin rhythms, soaring vocals, electrifying blues-psychedelic guitar solos, and irrepressibly jubilant percussion work – with widescreen hooks and melodies that will lodge themselves in the thicket of listeners’ senses and stay there.

The band’s signature sound arrives forcefully on the album opener “Yambu,” a righteously gritty and soulful stomper teeming with swirling B3 organ hooks and walloping guitar crunch.

The first single, “Anywhere You Want to Go,” is destined to storm the pantheon of Santana classics. Written by Gregg Rolie, it’s a sexy, body-shaking winner and an unmistakable tip of the hat to the inescapable cha-cha/Latin jazz charms of “Oye Como Va.”

Ronald Isley (The Isley Brothers) is a special guest on two tracks. His vocals highlight the feverishly impassioned Latin-rock workout “Love Makes the World Go Round” and the hard-edged and funky “Freedom in Your Mind.

santana4 MG FINAL WITH LOGOjpg

Guitar fans expecting fireworks from Santana and Schon will cherish Santana IV from front to back. “All Aboard” is a no-holds-barred guitar jam of the highest order, as is the slinky, soulful metal cruncher “Caminando,” which explodes with tectonic axe force. And on the unabashedly British blues-tinged “Shake It,” the two go toe to toe on not one but two extended solo runs that will have lovers of unhinged fretboard work rejoicing.

“Carlos and I feel more connected than ever,” says Schon. “We get super-aggressive when we play, but also melodic and poetic. We have an incredible dialog with each other on our guitars.”

Santana’s recurring themes of love and tolerance are common threads throughout Santana IV, most dramatically on the epic tone poem album closer “Forgiveness,” a languid and breathtakingly gorgeous atmospheric groover.

Music fans familiar with the “roaring lion” artwork on Santana’s 1969 debut album will instantly greet Heather Griffin-Vine’s graphic for Santana IV as a gloriously realized update of that iconic image. “I really think the music goes along with the cover, and vice versa,” says Santana. “It all fits together beautifully.”

Few bands can pick up a musical dialog after 45 years apart, but on Santana IV each band member reaches a new level of virtuosity and communal intuition on a collection of songs that easily stands side-by-side with the group’s treasured early work.

“When you can go back and break new ground with joy and determination – and  some whoop-ass energy – it gets you going,” says Santana. “I think we achieved something very rare. This music was screaming to come out of us. It wasn’t about nostalgia. It was about passion.”

Taking his Mother’s name, SAM OUTLAW just happens to have Ry and Joachim Cooder with a band that included Bo Koster (My Morning Jacket), Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Gabe Witcher (Punch Brothers) and Chuy Guzmán (Linda Ronstadt) produce his DEBUT album.

Sam Outlaw announce the release of Angeleno
January 15th 2016 and opening for Aaron Watson’s  UK dates

The future’s bright for the young Angeleno And an old song plays in his head Far as he knows. . .

These lines from the title track of Sam Outlaw’s debut album Angeleno could almost serve as a haikulike artist bio. Outlaw is a southern Californian singer-songwriter steeped in the music and mythos of west coast country, absorbing the classic vibes of everything from ’60s Bakersfield honky-tonk to ’70s Laurel Canyon troubadour pop and refashioning them into a sound that’s pleasurably past, present and future tense.
“The music I play, I call ‘SoCal country,’” says Outlaw. “It’s country music but with a Southern California spirit to it. What is it about Southern California that gives it that spirit, I don’t exactly know. But there’s an idea that I like that says – every song, even happy songs, are written from a place of sadness. If there’s a special sadness to Southern California it’s that there’s an abiding shadow of loss of what used to be. But then, like with any place, you have a resilient optimism as well.”While he explores those shadows on the title track and the elegiac “Ghost Town,” Outlaw mostly comes down on the side of the optimists through Angeleno’s dozen tracks. Opener “Who Do You Think You Are?” breezes in with south of the border charm, all sunny melody wrapped in mariachi horns, while “I’m Not Jealous” is a honky-tonker with a smart twist on the you-done-me-wrong plot. “Love Her For A While” has the amiable lope of early ’70s Poco, “Old Fashioned” the immediacy of a touch on the cheek, and the future Saturday night anthem “Jesus Take The Wheel (And Drive Me To A Bar)” shows Outlaw has a sense of humor to match his cowboy poet nature. Throughout, producers Ry and Joachim Cooder frame the material with spare, tasteful arrangements, keeping the focus on Outlaw’s voice. And it’s a voice that indeed seems to conjure up California in the same way as Jackson Browne’s or Glenn Frey’s. Easy on the ears, open-hearted, always with an undertow of melancholy.

Outlaw’s journey west began in South Dakota – he was born Sam Morgan -with stops in the midwest before his family finally settled in San Diego. Like many artists, he got the music bug early. But he had serious restrictions on what he could listen to. “I grew up in a conservative Christian home,” he explains. “My first real communal experience with music was in church. I always loved harmonizing with other people. And even though I was technically not allowed to listen to the radio, my dad loved the Beatles. My mom loved the Beach Boys and the Everly Brothers. So we listened to oldies radio, and I think got my first sense of melody and harmony from that.”
After what he calls an “unfortunate” high school cover band (“We did almost all Oasis,” he laughs) and some early stabs at songwriting in college, Outlaw’s moment of revelation arrived via the classic country voices of Emmylou Harris and George Jones. “When I first heard them, it totally blew my mind,” he says. “I went out the next day and bought Pieces of The Sky and a George Jones compilation. It was the first time I felt like I had a real special connection with music. That’s when I started to get more serious about playing the guitar and writing.”After switching gears from a day job in Ad sales to pursue his passion, Outlaw marked the change by borrowing his mother’s maiden name for a stage moniker. “The initial impetus for using Outlaw was no more than, ‘Hey, this is a name that sounds country and it’s a family name, so why not?’” he says. “Now, with my mom having passed away and her being a really strong encouragement in my life towards music, I like using the name as a way of honoring her.”

He wasted no time doing his mom proud. A self-released EP in 2014, buzz about his live shows, slots at Stage Coach and AmericanaFest, a video on CMT. Meanwhile, as he prepared to self-produce his first-full length album, his drummer Joachim Cooder played some rough demos for his father, legendary guitarist Ry Cooder.

“When Ry expressed interest in working with me, it was just, ‘Holy shit, I can’t believe it!’” says Outlaw. “I mean, there’s no sweeter person to make a ‘country music in Southern California record about Southern California.’ He’s a master of so many genres.”

To get familiar with the material, Cooder sat in with Outlaw’s    band. “Before we got in the studio, Ry had already played four  shows with us. It helped him curate which members of my    band would work best for the live tracking. I was thinking that    we’d have five rehearsals before the studio, get everything    super tight, then go in and knock it out of the park. But Ry    said, ‘The band knows the songs. Let’s leave some room for    life to happen when we get in there.’ I liked that he had faith in  the players and the songs that we didn’t need to over-    rehearse. And throughout the sessions, he was on top of every  nook and cranny of the arrangements. ”Recording in Megawatt Studios in Los Angeles, with a band that included Bo Koster (My Morning Jacket), Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Gabe Witcher (Punch Brothers) and Chuy Guzmán (Linda Ronstadt), Outlaw heard the album he always dreamed of coming to life. “Ninety percent of what you’re hearing is still the five of us in a room performing a song,” he says. “Ry plays on every song, electric and acoustic on the basics. And then all the overdubs he did were just insanely beautiful. He was able to make magic happen on every track.

The resulting record has the timeless feel of those that inspired Outlaw. It is also almost defiantly nontrendy. Does he worry about fitting in with a country scene teeming with bros and Bon Jovi wannabes? “This whole debate about what country music is or isn’t, bro country versus traditional, americana versus ameripolitan, it’s all pretty boring to me,” he says. “I think I made the distinction of SoCal country because I know that people crave classification. Ultimately I think that the music will speak for itself.”

As Outlaw gears up to support Angeleno with tour dates opening for Dwight Yoakam and Clint Black (“Two of my heroes,” he says), he’s hopeful not only for his own record but a comeback of the music he loves. “I’ve made it a personal mission to remind people how great country music is,” he says. “And specifically, I want to remind them that Southern California has a really rich history with country music. Even though there hasn’t been a scene here for a long time, there has been a noticeable resurgence. If I can be involved in some kind of revival in the spirit of this music, that would make me very proud.”
