Thirty Tigers is proud to present
Watkins Family Hour
– an acclaimed musical collective –
new album to be released August 7.

51aa41fa-1030-4218-87cf-e842daba5b1d

Watkins Family Hour—an acclaimed musical collective featuring siblings Sara and Sean Watkins along with Fiona Apple, Benmont Tench, Don Heffington, Greg Leisz and Sebastian Steinberg—will release their debut, self-titled album August 7 on Family Hour Records via Thirty Tigers. Watch the album trailer here. Additionally, in celebration of the release, the collective will take their “variety show of epic proportions” (Los Angeles Times) to cities across the U.S. this summer kicking off with a performance at the Newport Folk Festival on July 24. Tickets go on sale this Friday. See below for complete details.

The album, recorded live over three days in the studio of their friend and producer-engineer Sheldon Gomberg, captures the freewheeling spirit of the collective’s live shows. Watkins Family Hour is an all-covers affair; tracks include Sara doing Fleetwood Mac’s “Steal Your Heart Away,” Sean essaying Roger Miller’s wistful “Not In Nottingham,” from Disney’s 1973 animated Robin Hood, and Apple singing “Where I Ought To Be,” originally performed by Skeeter Davis.

Of the album and tour, Sara comments, “Taking the Watkins Family Hour on tour and releasing this record feels like the right next step. The show is about a community of players and that community stretches across the country. If we can’t get everyone to L.A. to do our show, we’ll come to them. We are coming to towns where we have friends and we can have those moments, even if it’s not our home club. It’s the people on stage who make that happen; it’s just a matter of getting the right group of people together. We are being thoughtful about where we are going so we can have that sort of flexibility. It will be a very different show in every town.”

Watkins Family Hour began in 2002 as a monthly musical residency hosted by Sara and Sean and held exclusively at Los Angeles’ Largo at the Coronet. Of the performances, Forbes praises, “This combination of seeing a marquee talent, the element of surprise and the congeniality of an evening of friends makes for a great night out, where the artists appear to be enjoying themselves, and enjoy seeing their friends perform. It feels like a 21st Century version of the Greenwich Village folk scene at clubs like the Bitter End in the 1960s. Mostly, what it feels like is—well—like Largo,” while American Songwriter asserts, “Inside the Largo, a funny thing happens: along with her brother, Sean, and friends like Fiona Apple and Jackson Browne, Watkins leads an evening of folk tunes, bluegrass jams and good old-fashioned musical revelry, a joyful room that brings wailing voices and acoustic strings to an electric city…”

Bhi Bhiman

TT logo-new

Bhi Bhiman returns to Europe, June 1st, on tour to launch his brand new crtically acclaimed album “Rythm & Reason” .

“I’m moving to Brussels / I’m moving to Spain / I’m moving to Haarlem / It’s all the same…”

BHi

“Tamil-tinged Americana with guts and smarts”
 The Guardian

“What a voice!”
The New York Times

One never knows where inspiration will strike. For Bhi Bhiman, the seeds of the soul, funk, and R&B narrative featured in his new album Rhythm & Reason were planted when he arrived in Brussels during a European tour with Rosanne Cash.

Bhi recalls the moment: “As soon as I got off the plane, I noticed a lot of African immigrants, and I started thinking about what had made them leave their countries. My parents are immigrants so I’m sensitive to that experience.” These reflections would find voice in “Moving to Brussels”, which Bhi describes as “an immigrant’s story disguised as a breakup song— a Dear John letter to their native country”.

Connections like these are a hallmark of the whole album. Bhi notes that the song cycle is ”deliberately broad. It could be about an immigrant or just an outsider in general – someone on the fringe.” While his songs often touch on political issues they rarely offer a simple view. Bhi explains, “I like to look at both sides of the coin. Sometimes the unpopular view is the most interesting to write about.”

A major change in Bhi’s life and a new inspiration for his songs came about when he became a father. The theme of family is strong in Rhythm & Reason. “A lot of this album was written while my wife was pregnant” he says. “Now we have a nine-month old. Seeing her grow and become a person changes your perspective on everything.” “Bennie Please” is a lullaby melody about a poor mother trying to get her hungry child to sleep. “Bread and Butter” sees our narrator coming home and enjoying the contentment with his family, in the face of the temptations of the seven deadly sins.

Bhi never forgets the creed of the concert performer. He elaborates, “That’s something that I work hard for: being entertaining first and foremost.” The beauty of it is that this is an album to which you could bob your head without noticing— much less worrying about —the social commentary or even the details of the stories. Bhi adds that, “Most of the tracks could be heard as love songs, but there are a few exceptions”, The bitter lyrics of The Fool, which was written with the Sri Lankan civil war in mind, is also an deep soul cut about having the wool pulled over one’s eyes in a relationship.

Exploring soul and soul-based music came naturally to Bhi and critics laud his talents both as a singer and guitar player. The New York Times’ Jon Caramanica wrote, “What a voice Bhi Bhiman has: full-bodied and brawny but delicate.” These gifts are on display in the deep grooves of “Death Song,” a minor-key hip hop-influenced number, the syncopated funk drumming of “Bread and Butter”, the horn-driven “Closer To Thee”, or the double-time “Waterboarded (In Love)”.

Bhiman lights up when asked about his influences for Rhythm & Reason. “Bill Withers’ Just As I Am, produced by Booker T. Jones, was a particular inspiration. The What’s Going On album was a big deal to me. Sly Stone, The Staple Singers, they all had something to say but but it was about the music above anything else.”

Rhythm & Reason was produced by Sam Kassirer (Lake Street Dive, Josh Ritter, Langhorne Slim) at his Great North Sound Society studio in rural Maine. Bhi recalls, “Sam has a great perspective. He comes from a jazz background so we were able to meet somewhere in the middle.” Mike Calabrese from Lake Street Dive plays drums on several tracks while friends of Kassirer and Bhiman join on other songs.

Despite some of its more serious notes, Bhi’s sense of humor still strikes through on Rhythm & Reason. “The Color Pink”which is about religious paranoia, finds Bhi pleading for sanity. As he describes it, “it’s Pop Staples meets Jerry Falwell”.

“Waterboarded (In Love)” is also darkly funny. As Bhi explains it, “The hook was supposed to be a placeholder. But then I started writing lyrics about a man being interrogated by a jealous lover. I liked that metaphor because on the surface, it uses a hot-button term and it makes you uncomfortable. But, comparing love to torture really is nothing new. The connection to the current debate about ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ just struck a chord with me.”

Bhi was born and raised in St. Louis, MO, the son of Sri Lankan Tamil immigrants. He drew on his family’s experience in reflecting on the circumstances of immigrant families—including the xenophobic cold shoulder they often encounter.

Stephen Kellogg to tour with Gregory Alan Isakov

Untitled.2dfb25b

Stephen Kellogg

Returns to Europe on tour mid October

unnamedStephen Kellogg

“Ask any group of people if their life has gone ‘exactly as they planned’ and one person (usually recently engaged) will raise their hand and say ‘yes.’ Well this song is for everybody else! In my own search for forgiveness for the things I’ve done of which I’m not proud, I’ve found that it usually begins and ends here. With a willingness to forgive oneself and others. It seems to be the lynchpin that connects the things that go wrong in our daily lives to the hope and redemption we’re all looking for.”

Stephen Kellogg will be touring with Gregory Alan Isakov

Stephen Kellogg claims that when he was growing up, his musical interests were divided between his father’s record collection, devoted to ’70s singer/songwriters like Jim Croce and Cat Stevens, and his sister’s rock & roll discs, dominated by hair metal acts such as Bon Jovi and Mötley Crüe. In a curious way, Kellogg’s music represents a meeting point between these two styles, with songs that delve deep into the personal, but make room for a sense of fun, while the music, which is intelligent and intimate, is also full of passion and electricity. Kellogg was born in Westchester, PA, and he began playing music in high school, singing in a hard rock band known as Silent Treatment. After graduating from high school, Kellogg enrolled at the University of Massachusetts in 1995, where he studied communication and theater, but his passion for music traveled with him, and he began performing on weekends with friends Darian Cunning, Tim Edgar, and Tim Newton. Kellogg also began working on his songwriting during this period, writing and recording solo acoustic demos, and when he graduated from college, he found himself working at the Iron Horse Music Hall, a celebrated venue in Northampton, MA, which inspired him to take a serious shot at making music his career. Kellogg began playing gigs anywhere and everywhere he could, and in 2000 he self-released his first album, South of Stephen, financed by his day job selling newspaper advertising. A second album followed in 2002, Lucky 11, which boasted a more pop-oriented sound, and Kellogg’s busy performing schedule was helping him make a name for himself in the Northeast.

However, Kellogg’s fortunes made their biggest change when he put together a band to accompany him on-stage; the Sixers, comprised of Brian Factor on drums, Keith Karlson on bass and keyboards, and Chris Soucy on guitar, added a new fire and enthusiasm to Kellogg’s concerts, and they helped make his 2004 album, Bulletproof Heart, his breakthrough release. Thanks to heavy touring, Bulletproof Heart became a strong seller at shows and in independent record stores, and the band’s growing fan base caught the attention of Universal Records, who signed the band to their Foundation imprint and released Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers in early 2005; early copies of the album were packaged with a bonus EP, One Night in Brooklyn, recorded during a 24-hour session with a handful of friends, including former Whiskeytown members Mike Daly and Caitlin Cary. While the self-titled album fared well with fans, Kellogg and the Sixers soon parted ways with Universal, and for their next studio album, 2007’s Glassjaw Boxer, the group partnered with the independent label Everfine Records, best known as the home of popular jam band O.A.R.

” I’m thirty-six years old. I say that I’m from Northampton, MA because that’s where I got my start, though now I live in Southern Connecticut. I’ve spent the better part of the last ten years on the road or in the studio, but I have four daughters and a beautiful wife  too. I asked if I could write my own biography, partially because it saves money, and I figured if someone wanted to learn about me, I’d just as soon tell them myself. My music has been described as Americana, Country-Rock, Folk, Singer/Songwriter, and, somehow, pop. I have always thought of it as American-rock n’ roll. It’s a product of my father’s record collection, from Jim Croce and Cat Stevens to Eagles and The Band. Somewhere along the way, I fell in love with showmanship and acts that put on great concerts. Sometimes that meant Van Halen, other times it meant the Grateful Dead, and most recently it’s probably more to do with John Prine. For what it’s worth, Tom Petty is my favorite artist. Although it’s been pointed out to me by one quite popular publication that I’m “no Bruce Springsteen”, I’ve decided to continue making music anyway (I’m laughing as I write this in case that’s not clear). The thing is…I fell into this job. I like people. I like sharing a world-view. I don’t mind singing and playing guitar, but I never expected that I’d do it for a living. Like a lot of folks, I think I just figured I wasn’t good enough or that maybe it wasn’t possible. The fact remained though that I needed a way to provide for my family, presumably just like those of you reading this biography (or for the younger generations, the same way your parents have). Ultimately writing songs and playing them for people has become that living. There are many occupations for which I have immense admiration – doctors, soldiers and teachers topping the list. But there isn’t another job I think I’d necessarily be suited for, so this is what I do.

In November of 2012, my band of the last ten years decided to take a hiatus. We performed our final show at Webster Hall in New York City for three hours and said goodbye for now. 2012 also took with it my mother-in-law and my grandmother. Most of this happened in late Spring, when my house was under renovation; the foundation was still there, but the house was literally ripped apart. Some metaphor, huh? 2012 was a year of change if nothing else. The musical result of this tumultuous period is Blunderstone Rookery. The title comes from the boyhood home of my favorite character in my favorite book, “David Copperfield”.

I produced Blunderstone Rookery in conjunction with my long-time musical collaborator, Kit Karlson. Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Monsters of  Folk) mixed the album. We chose to make the record in Bridgeport, Connecticut because, after making the last few in Los Angeles and New York, I really wanted to work on home turf. The music was played by a number of friends of mine, some of them play in bands you may have heard of (Travis McNabb and Annie Clements from Sugarland, Sean Watkins from Nickel Creek, Jerry DePizzo from OAR), and many of them, including me, you may not have heard of. I loved working on Blunderstone Rookery more than any album I’ve ever made and it’s my ninth studio effort. It was a fresh process. One that began with the exciting notion, “what if I say exactly what I want to say” and ended with me handing my father a vinyl copy to add to his record collection.

That, after all, is why I do this.

Using words and intention in the hopes of a positive legacy for my family. ”

The Dunwells appear on BBC 1 Andrew Marr Show with Ed Milliband

IMG_01877c8fca.1.1.1.1

FIND OUT MORE HERE!

Sunday 19th January 2014, The Dunwells appeared on the BBC Andrew Marr show with Ed Milliband and featuring an interview with Putin.  The Leed’s Band’s performance was introduced as “One for Ed Milliband, ‘I Could Be A King’?” by Andrew Marr who also highlighted the band’s British take on Americana music.    The band are currently in the studio with Stephen Harris working on their forthcoming new album and announced a British tour this week for April 2014.

The Dunwells are brothers Joe and Dave Dunwell along with cousins Jonny Lamb and Rob Clayton.  Having spent their formative years playing around Leeds, and honing their chops in the clubs, their first big break came when they hit the shores of the US in 2011 to perform at the Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis, TN.  Their impact was nothing short of astounding, and led to the band being signed to Austin based indie Playing In Traffic.  This, in turn, led to a co-deal with the respected  LA based independent Concord Music Group (Paul McCartney, Valerie June, Alison Krauss).
The fairytale continued throughout 2012 and 2013, as The Dunwells’ swift rise developed through endless touring, an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno as well as packed out shows at Red Rocks, CO, the Levitt Shell in Memphis, and the Rock Boat. They also appeared at major festivals in both the US (Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Bunbury) and the UK (Cropredy, HMV’s Next Big Thing, The Great Escape).
The Dunwells create a unique blend of emotionally driven, anthemic rock, featuring signature four part harmonies for which they have become known. Their appeal is widespread, with influences that range from Foy Vance and Crowded House, to Fleet Foxes and Elbow.  The band is looking forward to the upcoming UK tour and sharing new music with their growing legion of fans.

What the press has been saying about… Jason Isbell – Southeastern

What the press has been saying about… Jason Isbell – Southeastern

and the kind of grainy blue-collar detail that pins a song in your mind…a

breakthrough for Isbell…” – New York Times Magazine

“The words and music are scrubbed clean of self-pity and instead give off

energetic ruefulness, of the kind of that is one of the best combinations of

sobriety and clarity.” – NPR Fresh Air

“Every song on Isbell’s fourth studio album (after his Drive-By Truckers days) punches your gut.” •••1/2 (out of 4) – USA Today

“’Songs That She Sang In the Shower’ is merely the best-named of the many

masterfully melancholic country ballads found on this album…”“Must List” Entertainment Weekly

are), Isbell’s singing may be even better.” Grade: 9 (out of 10) – Paste
