The First Waltz

Hard Working Americans, featuring Todd Snider, Dave Schools, Neal Casal, Duane Trucks, Chad Staehly and Jesse Aycock, has announced the release of The First Waltz on October 28. The First Waltz is both a live album and live concert rockumentary film, which will be sold together in a special two- disc package via Melvin Records/Thirty Tigers. Take a look at this trailer of The First Waltz.

In January, the band released their self-titled debut album to much critical acclaim, that included Rolling Stone, NPR’s Fresh Air, Huffington Post, Relix and a TV debut performance on Conan (See Highlights). Hard Working Americans reached #1 on the iTunes Rock Chart and #1 on the Americana radio chart, where the album remained in the top 5 for 13 weeks. The band also received an Americana Music Award nomination for Best Duo/Group of the Year and will be performing on the awards show on September 17.

In The First Waltz, filmmaker Justin Kreutzmann (The Who, Grateful Dead) chronicles the band’s first collaboration, the making of their debut album and their sold-out, first-ever live performance in Boulder, CO. The band wanted to capture that first performance, as risky as that could be, and use it no matter what the outcome. Fortunately, the show was a major success, leading to a string of sold- out performances. The film features interviews with band members, as well as extensive behind-the-scenes footage. The First Waltz CD features a selection of songs featured in the film, as well as live tracks from the first tour. The album includes the brand new studio track, “Come From The Heart”, with Rosanne Cash, that also closes the film.

“I WILL NOT BE AFRAID” 1st September and LIVE 2nd & 3rd September – 24 year old extraordinary Caroline Rose debuts in London!

TT logo-new

Little Hi! Records and Thirty Tigers are proud to announce ‘ I Will Not Be Afraid ‘, the official debut album by Caroline Rose, a fiery 24 year-old songwriter raised on rockabilly, vintage country and blues-infused rock.

“I Will Not Be Afraid”

“Rose is a true American songwriter like Dylan, Van Zandt, or King – different stylistically, but all touch on something inherently continental…[she] spins stories with a sense of adventure, a certain badass swagger, and devil-may-care attitude.”
– WXPN

Sometimes epic failures produce epic results. With the release of her new album I Will Not Be Afraid, keen-eyed young singer-songwriter Caroline Rose has broken her long string of short-circuits with a live-wire national debut that draws on her roots in rockabilly, vintage country and blues to capture her unique and personal vision.

Hoping to escape the dead ends that befell her hometown, colloquially dubbed a stop on “heroin highway”, Rose found her way out via a full ride to a small liberal arts college, where she failed as a scholar, barely scraping by to graduation. Next came a stint as a failed hippie, working on and leaving an organic farm. She then bought a vintage sports car to travel the country, but it quickly broke down. On the plus side, Rose got a job at a cider distillery, where she got to taste apple brandy and applejack all day…Followed by a stint stocking shelves and sweeping floors at a grocery store for a boss who eventually fired her.

“That was the last straw,” Rose recounts. “I don’t like most bosses and most bosses don’t like me. I don’t like most professors and most professors don’t like me. So here I am. I’ve made my own way on my own terms and it’s destiny knocking on my door. BAM!”

She describes the 11 songs on I Will Not Be Afraid as “postcards I’ve picked up from along the road,” and she means that literally. Rose is in perpetual motion. She tours and lives in her van, traveling the highways and back roads to fuel her creative spirit.

Rose’s wanderlust has taken the 24-year-old from her birthplace in a not-so-idyllic small Northeastern town to every corner of the nation, where she’s made friendships, heard stories and had experiences that she’s fashioned into songs like “America Religious,” which uses a driving snare drum with brushes and psychedelic folk fiddle to underpin the cool waterfall of her peaches and molasses voice as she sings about the open skies and the storm clouds inside the American heart. And in her own.

The themes of some of Rose’s songs are drawn from the familiar. “Blood On Your Bootheels,” which opens I Will Not Be Afraid with her prickly guitar and crazy-carnival organ, was inspired by the Trayvon Martin slaying and Rose’s own passionate reaction to violence and intolerance. “Everyone seems to have their opinions about how to live free in this country, especially when it comes to young men and even more especially when it comes to young black men like Trayvon,” Rose observes. Injustice and hardship also underline “Tightrope Walker,” a song inspired by a friend’s stories about working in the school system of an impoverished Mississippi town.

But other songs literally haunt her dreams. The gorgeous textural arrangement and lyrics of “When You Go” — which evoke the openness of both the Southwest and of the future in Rose’s and co-producer Jer Coons’ shimmering guitars and her strong, defiant vocal performance — tumbled out during a night’s rest. “Sometimes songs come to me while I’m asleep and they wake me up, and that’s the best time for me to write,” Rose relates. “When I wake up my mind is like a clear glass of water. I can see everything and capture it.” That’s especially apt for the stream of consciousness lyrics that bring many of her numbers to life.

Rose’s own life seems more akin to Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. Growing up in a coastal town, her parents — who were visual artists with a love for travel — gave Rose a restless, creative spirit. And like many working class seaside locales, her hometown suffers epidemic heroin abuse.

“I saw a lot of my friends get consumed by it, but I was one of the people that got out,” Rose says. “I worked my ass off to go to college and that really was my only plan of escape at that point. I think I was in denial about being an artist.”

For two of those years Rose worked on the aforementioned farm, hoping the experience would provide her with balance and direction. “I liked the work, but I’m too city to be country and too country to be city,” she offers. “So I moved on.” When Rose worked at a cider distillery, she slept in the barn loft where she recorded many of the demos for I Will Not Be Afraid with her acoustic guitar.

“I finally accepted the idea that writing, singing and playing songs is the only thing I’ve ever really been good at,” Rose relates, “so I decided to forget about everything else and live in my car, and I hit the road.”

Rose joined a new generation of touring songwriters who blend tradition, innovation and edginess, like Hayes Carll, whom she opened for in 2014 and bandmember Jer Coons, whom Rose shared a bill with one night and discovered to be a kindred spirit. Rose produced I Will Not Be Afraid with co-production by Coons at his Burlington, Vermont studio, where they also made Rose’s 2013 self-released America Religious, playing all the guitars, keyboards, harmonica, mandolin, drums and percussion themselves.

Rose explains that the title track is her mantra. “So many people are held back by fear,” she says. “They wish they could do something else with their lives, and they just can’t take the first step. I grew up questioning everything and learned that I needed to be on my own. I needed freedom and I needed to create on my own terms and to keep moving forward without fear, wherever I go.

“I also came to understand that I don’t have any choice,” she continues. “Music is what keeps me breathing. I can’t do anything else.”

Jonny Two Bags (aka Wickersham from Social Distortion) delivers blinding solo debut release!

J2B_Album_Cover_Revised

facebook

Digital Single, ‘One Foot In The Gutter,’ released on 24th February
Digital Album, ‘Salvation Town,’ released on 31st March

Before joining Social Distortion in 2000 after his long-time friend’s, Dennis Danell, untimely death, Jonny Two Bags (Jonny Wickersham) had already put together a formidable punk rock resume. He co-founded and cut three albums with the Cadillac Tramps, and subsequently recorded and toured with L.A punk unit Youth Brigade, as well as pro skateboarder Duane Peters’ hard-edged U.S Bombs.

Wickersham, who co-wrote several songs with Ness for Social Distortion’s albums Sex, Love and Rock ’n’ Roll (2004) and Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes (2011), was also penning songs of his own during that time. He says, “I’ve always been a sideman, so I usually write songs with the hope that the singer will like what I’ve written, take it, tweak it and maybe add some verses of his own.”

After taking producer, David Kalish’s advice, Jonny Two Bags began working on his own record; ‘Salvation Town.’

Salvation Town defies expectations at every turn. The album reflects a multiplicity of music styles and influences. Wickersham’s father, a professional musician who played folk, rock n’ roll and country-rock, instilled in him a love of Southern California musicians like Warren Zevon and Linda Ronstadt. This mixed with his own taste in contemporary performers runs the gamut from Ryan Adams to Calexico, led to the soundings of ‘Salvation Town.’

The combination of Wickersham’s roots-music orientation and his dark, hyper-realistic compositions made for a stylistic shift that even the musician himself didn’t anticipate. “The finished product is not necessarily what I set out to do,” he says. ”It’s not a guitar record, and that’s something that I wouldn’t have expected.”

photo21

Produced by David Kalish, noted for his long association with Rickie Lee Jones, at his Redstar Studio in Los Angeles, the album has a diverse array of talent including Revered singer-songwriter Jackson Browne who shares vocals with Wickersham on “Then You Stand Alone,” David Lindley on four tracks, whose guitar work graced several of Browne’s classic ’70s albums, Los Lobos’ multi-instrumentalist David Hidalgo and his sons David Jr. and Vincent on “Wayward Cain” and sideman Greg Leisz (Lucinda Williams, Eric Clapton, k.d. lang, Dave Alvin) also appears on guitar. On drums is Pete Thomas, a mainstay of Elvis Costello’s bands . Guest vocalist Gaby Moreno (recent Latin Grammy Award winner as Best New Artist) sings on “Avenues” and backup singers Terry Evans and Arnold McCuller, best known for their work with Ry Cooder and James Taylor, contribute harmonies. Wickersham’s colleagues in Social Distortion, keyboardist Danny McGough and bassist Brent Harding, join on a few tracks while Austin accordion luminary Joel Guzman and bassist/punk kingpin Zander Schloss (Weirdos, Circle Jerks, Thelonious Monster) round out the lineup.

For many, the greatest revelation of Salvation Town will be Wickersham’s accomplished, fully-realized songwriting, which grew out of his tumultuous youth in the L.A. and Orange County music scenes. Writing and recording this album of streetwise and sometimes painfully frank songs about a life lived with “one foot in the gutter and one foot kicking in the door to Heaven” proved to be somewhat of a cathartic experience.

He notes, “As I was making this record, I realized that in some of these songs I’m singing about things that happened a lifetime ago for me and that was challenging. I just accepted the fact that I needed to purge myself on this record. I wrote about things that happened when I was growing up, feelings and experiences that I have had … stuff that I have never been that open about. Even though my life is different now all of those experiences are still hanging there, just below the surface. I guess it never really goes away … those that have lived it know.”

The Tragically Hip “Now For Plan A”

The Tragically Hip
Now For Plan A
Release Date: November 12th 2012

The Energy of Connectivity
Written by: Gavin Brown

It started making sense the night of the Bobcaygeon show last summer.

The Tragically Hip and I had already recorded 4-songs that spring at their studio in Kingston, a bit piecemeal, a little slow off the start and I was still looking for the magic, that something extra to make the new record special…

But that night as they hit the stage and hit their stride it became clear to me….they are a killer live band…

I’m overstating the obvious but I guess spending so much time tucked away in the studio trying to perfect the “unperfectable” (not a word) I think I lost sight of what the essence of this band is…The energy of connectivity…the five of them together…each providing his pulse to the flow…each playing off the other as no other band can.

The Tragically Hip have made great records their whole career and they’ve made many memories on nights like this….the moon shining, the crowd screaming, the songs one after the other, familiar yet reborn in the moment…

I hadn’t seen the Hip since their run at Massey Hall in Toronto a few years ago and maybe I had forgotten this while we were tracking each of them separately at the Bathouse that spring…

But now my job was clear…..channel this energy…let them play together…a living organism honed by the years.

We changed tack and retooled and found a studio able to house the five guys with their inimitable style and blasted through 14-songs in two weeks….there was the magic, there was the essence, every moment charged with the energy of connectivity no chance to over-think or worse….with a few finishing touches back at the Bathouse and a mix week in NYC the record was done….

Now For Plan A is the new Tragically Hip record due out November 12th 2012.

~

The Tragically Hip were formed in 1984 by five friends from Kingston ON – Rob Baker, Gordon Downie, Johnny Fay, Paul Langlois and Gord Sinclair.

The Hip have sold millions of records worldwide, managing to enjoy both mass popularity and critical acclaim.

The group released their first album, The Tragically Hip, in 1987 and have since released thirteen studio albums, earning two diamond certifications and over twenty #1 hits.

The Dunwells

Here’s a video of one of the tracks on EP..

The Dunwells on The Tonight Show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8RRi_dXH7k&feature=youtube_gdata_player

From the very first time The Dunwells hit American shores at the 2011 International Folk Alliance conference, their impact has been astounding. “Anyone that’s seen them has just been ‘Oh My God!’ They’re mind boggling!” raved Folk Alliance Executive Director Louis Jay Meyers to Voice of America radio. This auspicious start in the US had the band sign to a US independent label and recording in June 2011 at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Studio outside Austin, Texas. They have been touring back and forth across the Atlantic ever since. This September 2012 , their latest return home to the UK will be to launch their second EP, Leaving The Rose featuring the heartrending song “Oh Lord”, produced by John Porter and play 6 dates around the UK.

The Dunwells had set off from Leeds as a classic Brit band, a powerful fusion of their individual talents both vocal and musically. Emerging from the pubs and clubs of Leeds, England, their hometown in 2009, The Dunwells are brothers Joseph Dunwell (vocals, guitar) and David Dunwell (guitar, piano, banjo) along with cousins Jonny Lamb (vocals, drums) and Rob Clayton (bass) and long time best mate Dave Hanson (guitar, pedal steel). “We are genuinely best mates,” explains singer, songwriter and guitarist Joseph Dunwell. “We sometimes bicker and fight, but then we hug and make up and go out for a drink.” Their stellar musicianship, classic roots songwriting and soaring harmony vocals have already made instant but lasting impressions on all who hear or see them perform.

Their first U.K. single, “Elizabeth,” hit #31 on the Independent Music chart the week it was released on their debut EP in March 2010. The band spent the rest of the year touring Britain and Europe, playing such top festivals as Hop Farm (with Bob Dylan and Van Morrison), Edinburgh’s cutting-edge Fringe Fest, Triumph Live (with Mumford & Sons) and the Fete De La Musique in Paris. To help spread their music further, the band frequently busks on the streets of the cities they visit.

The brand new EP Leaving The Rose will be released on 1st October and will feature 4 recently recorded acoustic songs including an amazing version of Imogen Heap’s Hide & Seek.

1/Oh Lord ( edit)
2/Goodnight My City (acoustic version) –
3/I Could Be A King (acoustic version)
4/Only Me (acoustic version)
5/Hide & Seek (acoustic version)
