Dar Williams Signs To Bread & Butter

Featuring collaborations with Jill Sobule, Richard Thompson, Jim Lauderdale, the Milk Carton Kids, the Hooters, Lucy Wainwright Roche

Dar Williams to release her brand new album “EMERALD” on Bread and Butter Music May 18th 2015 and tour with dates in UK, Ireland and Germany

Dar Williams’s growth as an individual over her two-decade career has gone hand-in-hand with her evolution as an artist. This is perhaps best typified by the release of “Emerald,” a timely and brilliant album of new songs and collaborations with friends such as Jill Sobule, Richard Thompson, Jim Lauderdale, the Milk Carton Kids, the Hooters, Lucy Wainwright Roche and her mother Suzzy Roche and others. It marks her debut with the UK label, Bread and Butter (Essential) and is a sparkling collection of new original material, inspired collaborations and some surprising covers such as B.A.D.’s “Johnny Appleseed” making this album one of her best yet.

Raised in Chappaqua, N.Y., Williams spent 10 years living in the thriving artistic community of Northampton, Mass., where she began to make the rounds on the coffeehouse circuit. Joan Baez, an early fan of her music, took Williams out on the road and recorded several of her songs. The rest is history. Williams most recently released a live recording celebrating the 20th Anniversary of her legendary album, “The Honesty Room.”

In addition to being a touring artist, Williams is an author, teaches a course at Wesleyan University, and conducts annual song writing seminars. Williams devotes much of her time to environmental issues and causes, and has created “Give Bees A Camp” which combines concerts and the planting of bee-friendly gardens for young campers.

The Mediaeval Baebes to release Auld lang Syne on December 12th 2014 in time for New Year’s Celebrations

AuldLangSyne copy

Mediaeval Baebes , Of Kings & Angels: A Christmas Carol Collection.

Apparently the Renaissance Faire community also needs a holiday album of its own, so here it is. The titillating ensemble name notwithstanding, this batch of time-tested Western European carols, most in English, a couple in standard Latin, others in Middle English and Medieval Latin just for fun. The sextet is supplemented on several songs by additional female voices, creating a light, effervescent vocal experience.

Rating: Three stars

The Baebes have recorded a hauntingly beautiful version of Auld Lang Syne.

This single adds another glorious track to their festive repertoire and celebrates the USA/Canadian launch Of Kings & Angels and the highly sort after green vinyl version of the album. The lead vocal is taken by Sophie Ramsay, the latest addition to the Mediaeval Baebes line up, who hails from Scotland and therefore has chosen to sing the original  old scotch lyrics  as penned by Robert Burns. In keeping with the nostalgic message of the song The Mediaeval Baebes have chosen the most authentic version of the song in keeping with the lyrics and with Katherine Blake’s brilliant production skills, have come up with a sparse yet powerful and true rendition of the classic Auld Lang Syne to be released digitally worldwide on December 12th.

Auld Lang Syne is an old Scots song. The words were written by the poet Robert Burns in 1788, though the phrase ‘auld lang syne’, meaning ‘old long since’ is also found in older folk songs. It is a song is about nostalgia, reflecting on old friendships and love, raising a cup in memory. For this reason, it is a popular favourite all over the world at New Year. Auld Lang Syne is set to two different tunes. We sing the lesser-known, which is said to have been Burns’ preferred version, while his editor preferred the one that became famous. The better-known version feels appropriate in a rowdy pub, but the other is subtler, more reflective and perhaps more expressive of song’s meaning. I first heard this tune from the singing of Gill Bowman. Below are the lyrics we sing (leaving out one of the original verses).

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp!
and surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
We twa hae paidl’d in the burn,
frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
sin auld lang syne.
And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere!
and gie’s a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll tak a right gude-willy waught,
for auld lang syne.
English Translation

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely you’ll buy your pint cup!
and surely I’ll buy mine!
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.
And there’s a hand my trusty friend!
And give me a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson soaked up the music of their father, Memphis legend Jim Dickinson, and absorbed the North Mississippi legacy while playing and shaking it down in the juke joints with their blues ancestors. R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Otha Turner and their musical families were at their peak, making classic records and touring the world. Eventually, Luther (guitar, vocals) and Cody (drums, vocals) formed the North Mississippi Allstars.

John Fullbright releases album ‘Songs’ and single ‘Never Cry Again’!

‘Songs’ out 27.07.2014

On July 21st, John Fullbright will release his second studio album, ‘Songs,’ (Blue Dirt/Thirty Tigers). The new album showcases the strongest songwriting of the 25 year-old’s career and follows the breakout success of his 2012 debut ‘From the Ground Up,’ which was nominated for the ‘Best Americana Album’ Grammy and featured in the Wall Street Journal, LA Times, NPR and more.

If there’s a recurring motif that jumps out upon first listen to ‘Song,’ it’s the act of writing itself. ‘When I discovered Townes Van Zandt, that’s when I went, ‘You know, this is something to be taken pretty damn seriously,” says Fullbright. ‘You can write something that’s going to outlast you, and immortality through song is a big draw.’

The arrangements on ‘Songs’ are stripped down to their cores and free of ornamentation. Fullbright’s guitar and piano anchor the record, while a minimalist rhythm section weaves in an out throughout the album. That’s not to say these are simple songs; Fullbright possesses a keen ear for memorable melody and a unique approach to harmony, moving through chord progressions far outside the expected confines of traditional folk or Americana. The performances are stark and direct, though, a deliberate approach meant to deliver the songs in their purest and most honest form.

Listen to the album ‘Songs’ here:

Never Cry Again,’ is the first single to be taken from the critically acclaimed album, ‘Songs

Never Cry Again,’ out 02.06.2014

“Never Cry Again” is taken from Fullbright’s  forthcoming  second album simply entitled “Songs” . The new album is destined to firmly establish Fullbright with even greater critical acclaim following on from his stunning debut LP ‘From the Ground Up’ which was more than deserving of its Grammy and Americana Award nomination.

Born in Woody Guthrie’s hometown of Okemah, Oklahoma, John Fullbright grew up surrounded by a rich musical heritage, influencing his own music, as demonstrated in the brilliant new single, ‘Never Cry Again.’

Nicole Atkins releases first single ‘Girl, You Look Amazing,’ from the album ‘Slow Phaser.’

OUT 27.05.2014

The poptastic ‘Girl, You Look Amazing,’ is the first single to be taken from Nicole Atkins, ‘Slow Phaser,’ album. Being forced to pack up two years of songs, poetry and journals, after experiencing Hurricane Sandy in Memphis, Atkins collaborated with Jim Scalvunos (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Cramps) and producer Tore Johansson (Franz Ferdinand, The Cardigans) to devise a compelling new sonic approach, melding psychedelic energy, prog rock adventurism, after hours disco ambience, and the raw emotional purity of the finest country soul. Atkins stripped her traditional instrumentation to its core – Johansson handled bass duties, joined by The Cardigans’ Lars-Olaf Johansson on guitar, keyboardist Martin Gjerstad, and Asbury Park’s own Sam Bey behind drum kit – placing considerably more emphasis on electronics than on her previous recordings.

Girl, You Look Amazing,’ is the first single to be taken from the album, ‘Slow Phaser,’ out 28th April 2014
